A major portion of my professional life
was confined to writing articles for learned journals and developing texts
concerning my discipline. I frequently felt the necessity to produce rather
than to reflect. Consequently, upon my retirement I decided to devote my
limited talents to help myself and others to discover relevant messages from
Scripture for living in our present-day society. The devotional thoughts that I
have written represent an attempt to elicit everyday application of Scripture
for others to consider and hopefully, to prompt you to send me your reactions
or responses
For a number of years I have led
various Bible Study groups. I attempt to approach each session as a learner as
well as a leader. I have conducted these sessions in a variety of settings both
in groups and on an individual basis. My commitment to do so is primarily
motivated by the conviction that although most biblical explorations are well
meant, they are mostly confined to teaching about rather than prompts to action
and attempts to examine the central message of a Scriptural account. I began my
quest with group studies of the Parables and came to greatly admire how our
Lord was able to convey truths through everyday observations. I have attempted
to guide groups in extracting message for the believer to utilize in individual
spiritual growth by employing His methods.
Another major purpose for expending
many hours writing and revising these devotionals is to leave them as a legacy
to our children - some who have embraced the Lord and others who are still
seeking. It is my fervent hope and prayer that through these writings each of
them will be able to more clearly see what the Lord has meant to me and how I
sense His guidance as I go through my everyday life. My ardent plea is that He
will also serve each of them as his/her personal guide.
