FAITH TO MOVE MOUNTAINS

READ: Mark 11: 22-24

“…if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move.  Nothing will be impossible for you.”  Matthew 17:20 (NIV)

What is our Lord trying to communicate to His disciples?   Is He suggesting that they would be able to rearrange geographic features if they only had sufficient faith?  Why would anyone want to move a mountain from one location to another?

As always, if we are to understand this portion of scripture and its meaning for our lives today, it’s important to dig deeper; and to look at the setting and the context in which these words were originally spoken.

‘Removing mountains’ was a Jewish figure of speech for that which was considered incomparably difficult (Mountains were considered to be the most stable of all things (see Psalm 46:2; Isaiah 54:10).  Thus Jesus was telling them that nothing is impossible if they truly believed and trusted God.

Are there ‘mountains’ in your life or in those of your loved ones that need removing  -- problems that seem to defy solution?  We have His assurance that nothing is impossible if we ask for their removal in faith.
