ONE DAY AT A TIME
READ: Ecclesiastics 3: 1-8
“This is the day that my Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in
it.” Psalm 118:24 (NIV)
I recall as a young lad wishing days away as they often seemed to be barriers
to some special event in the future. I would cross of the days on the
calendar and count down the days before the projected “grand happening”.
However, I consistently found that reality seldom equaled my
expectations. When the special day arrived, there was a sense of
let down, a feeling of disappointment! But yet I was prone to repeat the
same scenario over again and each time feel the tinge of disillusionment when the
special day did finally arrive.
As I matured, I have become increasingly aware that my days are numbered and
are not to be wished or frittered away. I have discovered that which the
Lord declared to Jeremiah was equally true for me, “for I know the plans I have
for you,…plans to prosper and not to harm you and plans to give you hope and a
future.” Jeremiah 29: 11 (NIV)
Consequently, I am becoming more focused on today rather than the
promises of tomorrow and I attempt to keep in mind that yesterday is gone and
its events cannot be changed and tomorrow might never come for me; so today
is all I really have. My daily petition has become, “Lord, let me be
a blessing to someone today and guide me in using this day You have given me.”
Amen
